Choose your base
Choose a Vienna hotel by the airport connection that actually runs on your travel date. During the current rail works, an old instruction to take the S7 straight to Wien Mitte can send you the wrong way. Compare the arrival station, final connection and hotel entrance as one journey, especially for a short stay.
Airport connection
Checked 7 September 2026: Vienna’s tourism office reports changed routes through the end of October 2027. REX7 services link the airport with Hauptbahnhof; the S7 is shortened to St. Marx. From St. Marx, onward travel can involve a tram or bus, and the nearest U3 stop is a walk away. Use ÖBB’s date-specific planner rather than treating these notes as a timetable.
The last part of the journey
A base around Hauptbahnhof can simplify arrival if your selected train ends there, but compare the onward journey to the sights you want to see. For a hotel around Wien Mitte or the historic centre, price and time the final connection before booking. Do not choose the airport train only by its label: a direct station-to-station service is not necessarily the simplest route to your hotel.
Early flights and practical details
For a late landing or early departure, check the exact first or last usable connection and a fallback. Allow for luggage collection and hotel check-in; verify accessibility and lift availability with the operator. A rental car may help for a separate countryside leg, but city parking and pickup conditions deserve their own comparison. Recheck the works notice shortly before travel.
